Newsletter December 2009 With 2009 coming to a close we find ourselves with Christmas almost here giving us an opportunity to enjoy festivities without the early morning routines of plaiting, working horses, travelling etc. We hope you are all enjoying a well earned break from the show ring and are rejuvenating for the 2010 season. We have had a fabulous year of shows keeping us all busy with lots of early mornings, lots of miles and lots of entry forms to complete.
Our official measurers Gail Iskra, Laurie and June Ingram commenced the year with official Measuring days. 153 horses were presented for official measurements in 2009 and now our measurers have added a microchip scanner to their kit to enable easy identification of all micro-chipped horses. We would like to see more of our members attend measuring days to streamline preparations for our shows. Horses being pre-measured, also gives you one less task on competition day and we would urge any members planning on exhibiting young stock and Newcomers at our Rising Star Show in 2010, attend measuring days scheduled below, this will ensure your horses official measurement prior to competition, as we will not be providing any official measurements on competition day, as the measuring bay at the Rising Star venue Parkridge Pony Club is not certified for official measurements. Measuring dates Sunday 10th January 2010 - Carrara Sunday 17th January 2010 - Gatton Sunday 31st January 2010 - Greenbank Sunday 7th February 2010 - Caboolture The 2009 Rising Star New Horse of the Year Show was held on 7th June 2009 at Nerang Pony Club on the Gold Coast. This was the second year the event was held at this venue and proved to be very successful once again despite a thunderous storm rolling through midmorning holding up the show temporarily. Most competitors packed away and kept dry whilst the storm passed and the day broke into beautiful sunshine. Our judge for Rising Star was Leanne Donoghue all the way from South Australia. Leanne brought to the show a wealth of showing experience. The Amateur Owner ring was judged by Graham Salmon from Rockhampton in North Queensland, who also provided competitors with a quality show horse experience. As much as I would like to give you a review on our winners on the day, I did not stand still long enough to be able to give you any comments on the outcomes. But from the photos I have seen and the moments I saw in the presentation area, there are some beautiful up and coming new horses to enter our future show rings along with the led Youngstock which we look forward to seeing under saddle at our 2010 Rising Star Show. Our show provided competitors with beautiful Garlands for our Champions and trophy Rugs for the Champions, Reserve Champion and Owner Rider exhibits. A big thank you to sponsors, Caroline Brace, Champion Choice Browbands, Horseland Nerang, Cheryl’s Sheepskin, Lotus Institute, Millawa Lodge, The Douglas Family, and Equestrian Land Development. The Nerang Pony Club catered throughout the day along with Cruising Cappuccinos, catering for our judges and officials. Exhibitors travelled from as far as Yepoon, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Warick to name a few. With some members taking advantage of camping at the grounds to take some pressure off a long day travelling and competing on the Sunday. The 2010 Rising Star Show will be held Sunday 13th June at the Parkridge Pony Club with a new schedule to include Newcomer Hunters. The amateur owner ring will not be scheduled. Instead the highest scoring Amateur Owner will be awarded in the Rising Star classes. The Queensland Country Hack Championship held at the beautiful Maryborough Showgrounds on the Fraser Coast in Queensland on the weekend 5th & 6th September 2009, was well supported with 146 entries exhibited. The show commenced with the led’s being held in the indoor arena due to heavy rain delaying the outdoor schedule. The storm soon passed and the intermediates were presented on the outdoor arena and the show went on as scheduled. Under the watchful and experienced eyes of Judges Jodie Allen, Greg Shepherd and Bev Richards, a beautiful selection of quality horses and ponies were exhibited and garland throughout the weekend On the 9th & 10th October 2009 Show Horse Council Queensland Inc proudly presented the Horse of the Year Show for 2009. The venue was once again the Gatton Showgrounds offering competitors excellent stabling and camping facilities along with an outdoor arena for Friday mornings Led and intermediate ridden classes and the huge indoor to cater for the grand national qualifying events. Under ideal weather conditions the show enjoyed record entries. This year the judges were Robert Cockram (Vic), Fiona Mardling (Vic) and Geraldine Crocker (SA) who were kept busy with 2 full days of competition. Angus Lane our Show Announcer provided timely class calls, plenty of sponsor air space and kept competitors and spectators well informed. The show started on the Friday morning with 3 rings for the Led classes on the outdoor arena followed by the Intermediate ridden. These certainly set the tone for the weekend with quality exhibits being awarded and rugged. The show then retreated to the shade of the indoor for the afternoon’s program of Leading Rein, 1st Ridden and Hunter classes which were well represented keeping the judges busy throughout the afternoon and early into the evening. A free BBQ, compliments of the SHCQ Committee and supplied by Kingsley Catering was provided to the exhibitors on the Friday night with 100 people taking advantage of a free feed. The Saturday morning program commenced in the indoor arena with rider classes, and the first class was the under 6 years to be led and had a record 10 entries. What a wonderful sight to see the future of the sport represented by these young riders. Lots of goodies were given away to all the young riders, soft toys, Horseland Nerang Show bags, trophies and medals. The afternoon delivered the Open saddle horse Classes which were very well represented with as many as 26 in the small hack and 28 in the large pony classes. The standard of exhibits very high with all classes well challenged. The trophy table was very busy awarding rugs (for the first time having been awarded by tender) and beautifully made by Show Horse Design, Garlands were outstanding and provided by Conception Garlands, vouchers for our Smartest on Parades, Medals for Riding Pony, Sashes for Saddle Pony, Rugs for the ANSA awards and Amateur Owner Champions. SHCQ is an affiliate of Show Horse Council Australasia and a requirement of the affiliation is for SHCQ to undertake insurance as directed by Show Horse Council Australasia. In order to bring our membership year inline with SHCA any memberships paid after the 1st July 09 will be current until 31st June 2010. Memberships have always been due for renewal annually in January but in considering rising costs and to assist members in spreading their membership commitments SHCQ will now have their membership year from 1st July - 30th June. For those members who have paid their membership prior to the 1st July 09 an additional $40 will be due on the 1st January, 2010 bringing you in line with the new membership year, giving you 6 months cover until 30th June 2010. All memberships will then become due for renewal on the 1st July 2010, for a full years membership. I would like to point out the positives as follow.

Committee Nominations In preparation for the Annual General Meeting to be held on 9th March 2010 at the Beenleigh Bowls Club nominations for the Committee will need to be submitted by 22nd January 2010. Committee members eligible for re election and who have advised they intend to stand are Kim Taunton, Polly Oliver, Amanda Edwards, June Hughes and Kristen Taunton. Peter Widdowson resigned from the Committee earlier this year after contributing many years of tireless hours whilst having a busy professional working life and whilst showing his beautiful horses. Peter not only contributed as the President but was rarely missing from a meeting and was a great team worker. Peter also carried out Announcer duties for the Rising Star shows. Thank you Peter for your support and time on the Committee and we look forward to seeing you around in 2010 – maybe as Rising Star announcer! This year voting will be via postal vote. When nominating please include a profile of your skills/interests etc so members can make an informed decision when casting their vote. Nomination Forms can be downloaded from website. The Committee has worked tirelessly this year to present 3 very successful shows along with our measurers providing 4 official measuring days. These shows take a great team effort with, measurers, stewards, marshals, caterers, photographers, Trade Stands, announcers, administration, sponsors and volunteers. Entries on their own can take up to 30 hours to process and this is just one task for one show! There is another 30 hours to catalogue, send receipts etc. So help us help you have hassle free entries for 2010 – Admin tips for your Horsey Desks Over the Summer Break! 1. Have your registrations submitted to The National Show Horse Registrar in plenty of time – The new ruling will be upheld in 2010 with horses/ponies to be registered 2 months prior to close of entry. In addition Led and intermediates will be required to be registered for our HOTY’s with the exception of those competing at the Rising Star Show. (But to confuse you Rising Star exhibitors entering the Amateur/Owner component will be required to be registered to demonstrate proof of ownership). There is approx a 3-4 week turn around for new Registrations. 2. Exhibits must be shown in the name on the Registration form – All exhibitors must be members. If you are leasing and don’t yet have an official National Saddle Horse lease – organize early – Official lease agreements can be downloaded from www.showhorsecouncilaust.com.au 3. Send your entries in on time and double check your tick list so all paperwork and monies are included. The math’s is easy Correct paperwork = happy treasurer = happy exhibitor. Incorrect paperwork = grumpy treasurer = ticked off member/exhibitor.
